One of the silver linings I’ve seen of our current situation is this renewed sense of community. Local musicians have been playing balcony gigs for their neighbours, kids are playing in the streets like it’s the 90s again and people are looking out for each other via various CareArmy type organisations that have emerged. There’s also a strong “support local business” vibe going on and many of us appear to be really conscious of supporting local business where we can, whether that be by ordering takeaway from a local restaurant once a week, grabbing a coffee from a different café every day, or by ordering some gifts online from a small business.
If you’re looking for some small businesses to spread some love and money to, I can guarantee the owners of these six listed below are absolute gems and deserving of some of your hard-earned cash. I’ve had the pleasure of working with these local brands in the past and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed crushing on their products / service in the process. It was really hard to narrow it down to just six but here’s the list!:
1. Kind Coconuts (Brisbane based)
Sustainable, cruelty free skincare for babies
Erin, the owner of Kind Coconuts, is a fully qualified pharmacist who has created a range of natural, sustainably and ethically produced skincare for babies and toddlers. Kind Coconuts’ pure and gentle products are all made in Australia and are enriched with organically grown, Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil sourced directly from local villages and plantations in Fiji. They support Fijian communities, ensuring local villagers are paid directly for the coconuts they supply.
The Kind Coconuts product range currently includes Baby Bath Wash and Baby Bottom Balm, with more natural products planned for the future. Check out the range at kindcoconuts.com.au
2. Hygge Dress (Gold Coast based)
Ethically made, timeless, linen dresses
hygge (“hue-gah”) – is a Danish concept of that charming, special feeling of enjoying the simple pleasures in life, which could not be more relevant right now. Narelle has created this brand of simple, timeless dresses made from premium European linen fabrics, designed and sewn in Australia. The vision behind Hygge Dress was to make timeless yet modern dresses to flatter any woman, making her feel happy and content.

Nareen from NAMII has recently launched her luxurious skincare brand, designed to deliver amazing results, while creating a calming, nurturing experience. 4. For Love & Living (Gold Coast based)
Aesthetically pleasing, luxury picnics
Emma from For Love and Living is an absolute genius when it comes to aesthetically pleasing events. Her main gigs are stunningly gorgeous weddings but, due to the big “C” situation, it’s currently the perfect opportunity to book out some of her time for one of her luxury picnic experiences. Now that we gatherings of 10 people outdoors are permitted, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a special birthday or celebration.

6. Chef Kate (Gold Coast)
Organic spice mixes
A good friend of mine, Chef Kate, is a local food wizard who offers personal chef services as well as her own range of organic spice mixes, teas, and bath salts via her website. I am never without her Hey Hot Tamale Organic Mexican Spice Mix or Foo King Yum Organic Asian Spice mix in my pantry. I love the Hey Hot Tamale spice mix on chicken, while the Foo King Yum spice mix is perfect for making sautéed veggies that little bit more delicious. Her website also provides some recipe inspo for incorporating her spice mixes into some delicious meals.
